Spring Has Sprung: Time to Get Planting!

As April rolls in and the weather begins to warm up, there’s no better time to dig your hands into the soil and start planting in your garden. Living in Virginia, we get to enjoy a diverse climate that makes it perfect for a variety of plants. Here are the top five items I’m excited to plant this month!

1. Tomatoes: The Garden Favorite

Can you really have a garden without tomatoes? It’s a classic choice for many gardeners, and I’m no exception. April is the perfect month to transplant tomato seedlings outdoors. They thrive in the Virginia sun, making it easy to grow juicy tomatoes that’ll be perfect for summer salads and sauces. Remember to choose a sunny spot and add plenty of compost to enrich the soil!

2. Basil: The Perfect Companion Plant

Basil isn’t just for decoration, it’s a must-have in any herb garden. This fragrant plant pairs wonderfully with tomatoes, enhancing their flavor while also deterring pests. I usually plant basil alongside my tomatoes to create a mini herb garden. Plus, nothing beats the taste of fresh basil in a homemade pasta dish!

3. Peppers: Spice Up Your Garden

April is also a great time to get bell peppers and other varieties planted. These colorful, crunchy additions not only bring beauty to the garden but are also incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Whether you’re making a stir-fry or adding them to salads, homegrown peppers always taste better. Just be sure to give them enough room to grow!

4. Carrots: Root Vegetables Rock

Don’t forget about the roots! Carrots are a great choice for spring planting. They love the cool soil, and if you plant them in April, they'll be ready to harvest by early summer. I enjoy planting different varieties, like the classic orange or unique purple and white carrots. They add a fun twist to any meal!

5. Zucchini: A Summer Staple

Zucchini is another favorite of mine to plant this time of year. Growing them is easy, and they produce a bountiful harvest. Just make sure to have enough space, as zucchini plants can spread out quite a bit. Plus, they’re super versatile; from grilling to baking, zucchini can be used in various delicious recipes! Just make sure to check for the squash bug frequently!

As I get my hands dirty and search for that perfect plot in my garden, I can’t help but feel the excitement that spring brings. April is the beginning of a fruitful gardening season, especially here in Virginia. What’s on your planting list this month? Let’s bring our gardens to life!
